On March 3, 2025, Florida House launched an exciting exhibit in partnership with the University of Florida’s Smathers Libraries. This exhibit collaboration ‘Sunshine Stories’ highlights Florida’s diverse cultural and historical contributions through maps, and features rare, archived maps that bring Florida’s vibrant past to life. Florida House was honored to have Senator Rick Scott and his wife Mrs. Ann Scott attend this opening celebration and host the ribbon cutting ceremony.
The exhibit begins with early maps of St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest continuously inhabited city, highlighting its significance as a Spanish stronghold and gateway to the New World. As Florida grew, the transportation boom of the late 19th century—driven by Henry Flagler’s railroads and Henry Plant’s steamboat lines—transformed the state, making it more accessible than ever. This period laid the foundation for modern Florida, shaping key cities and inviting new waves of development.

Following World War II, Florida’s identity as a vacation destination flourished, leading to a rise in creative, colorful, and engaging tourist maps designed to attract travelers. These maps reflect the growing popularity of Florida’s beaches, theme parks, and natural wonders. The exhibit concludes with some of the earliest recorded maps of Florida’s most iconic cities, including Gainesville and Orlando, offering a glimpse into their original layouts and early urban planning. Sunshine Stories invites visitors to discover how maps tell the story of Florida’s transformation from a remote frontier to a world-renowned destination.
Smathers Libraries has long been a cornerstone for preserving Florida’s history, and this exhibit will provide a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with their incredible collections right in the heart of Washington, D.C. We look forward to welcoming guests to explore this new exhibit and celebrate the stories that make Florida truly special.

Florida House is open to the public for tours from 9 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday. If you are interested in scheduling a school group tour or visit and would like a customized program highlighting the exhibit, please email events@floridahousedc.org.
